Prof. Shefner is a Senior VP at the Barrow Neurological Institute and chair of the Department of Neurology.
In 1996 he co-founded the Northeast ALS Clinical Trials Consortium (NEALS).
He has developed numerous outcome measures for clinical trials, and is a member of the Editorial Boards of the ALS Journal and Neurotherapeutics.
